Welcome to the awesome world of Colgate 26 sailors and sailboat owners. Colgate 26 sailboats are known as A Boat For All Reasons, because they are so versatile and safe in all wind and sea conditions. Many Colgate 26 owners just enjoy sailing in and around harbors and lakes with family and friends. Other Colgate 26 sailors spend most of their time aboard racing in local and regional competitions. Some Colgate sailboat owners are members of sailing clubs and sailing schools that use the Colgate 26 sailboat exclusively for club activities, coaching sailboat racers and teaching new sailors.

Whatever the reason, you can be assured that your Colgate 26 is a safe and unsinkable sailboat, with ergonomic comfort and sophisticated go-fast features that make sailing so much fun.

LENGTH OVERALL

At 25’8” overall, the Colgate 26 is a Class 1 vessel, which is subject to fewer US Coast Guard requirements.

BEAM

The Colgate 26 beam is 8’6” which falls within the maximum legal width for highway towing.

WEIGHT

The Colgate 26 weighs 2,600 pounds; the shoal draft model weighs 2,800 pounds.

DRAFT

The Colgate 26 standard model draft is 4’6” with 1,050 pounds of lead in the keel; the shoal draft model draft is 3’6” with 1,250 pounds of lead in the keel.

AN INCREDIBLY POWERFUL AND EFFICIENT SAIL PLAN

The very efficient Colgate 26 sail plan is the ultimate sail design feature that makes this 26 footer perform so well. Under full sail, the Colgate 26 flies through the water with design features that allow you to tweak and adjust the trim of the sail for ultimate speed and comfort. In heavy air, you can easily reef the main to control excessive heeling – a feature not generally found on boats of this size.

When putting the boat to bed, neither the main nor the jib need to be removed after sailing. The jib roller furls and the main slides down for easy slab folding over the boom.

Built by Tartan Yachts in Painesville, Ohio, the Colgate 26 is a versatile sailboat, ideal for day sailing, racing, and lessons. Designed by Olympic sailor Steve Colgate and naval architect Jim Taylor, it prioritizes safety and performance. Colgate wanted a fast, comfortable, and easy-to-sail boat that would teach sailing fundamentals and racing techniques. The Colgate 26 features big boat characteristics, one-design performance, and user-friendly design, making it perfect for both beginners and experienced sailors transitioning to larger boats. It’s a great all-around sailboat for any sailing enthusiast.

UNSINKABLE AND EASY TO MANEUVER

The Colgate 26 is a fast, high-performance keelboat with safety and ergonomic features that make it fun to sail in any conditions. Its positive foam flotation makes it unsinkable. With a transom just inches above the water, it’s easy to board, even in emergencies. In 1999, three Offshore Sailing School students on a test sail rescued two hypothermic people in Chicago Harbor, using their rescue training. The students pulled them aboard from the Colgate 26’s easy-access transom and were later awarded the Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal for their actions.

TIMELINE

Construction starts when three orders are received and generally takes an average of ten weeks from start to finish.

SAIL AWAY PAYMENT TERMS

A new Colgate 26 starts at $87,500 ready to sail. To order, a one-third deposit is required, with the next third due at deck and keel installation, and the final payment upon completion. See the Complete Sail Away Package for included features and explore optional customizations.

DELIVERY OPTIONS

Order a trailer and we’ll have the boat on the trailer ready for you to come pick up your boat yourself. Or ask us to arrange for a boat delivery service to bring it to the yard of your choice. It can be on a trailer or not when delivered by truck. Delivery by us is, of course, an extra charge, as is the cost of a trailer.

RIG IT AND SET SAIL!

When the boat arrives, all you need do is rig the mast and put the sails on – which generally can be done by two or three people. A handbook is included when the boat is delivered, or it can be emailed in advance so you are ready to jump into action!

A NEW COLGATE 26 BUILDER!
